I'm not sure even F/4.0 would help the problem I encountered is I found a hawk, but it was a bit back in the forest when it was still I was able to get a few shots in good focus, but mostly facing away so not pleasing to look at. when it decided to fly around east, the other trees confused the autofocus. I could see about where it went, but too high and the leaves completely hid it. I'll probably see it again because I'm getting better at listening to follow my ears and find them.I have toyed with the idea of buying a used 400mm f/4 DO II as their prices are plunging, but my 100-500mm is sharper at 500mm than the 2 DO IIs I have bought and sold, and the zoom is so much more versatile that I would bring out the prime on only very rare occasions, if ever, for dim light. The RF 100-800mm at f/9 is at least as sharp as the DO II at 800mm with the 2xTC and lighter.
Beautiful shot, but how did you get that angle?
Appreciated Eric.Beautiful shot, but how did you get that angle?

It's common Kestrel.I'm trying to train myself to always bring a camera when I go on a walk and it payed of yesterday: A harrier was hunting nearby and allowed me to get relatively close, 25m according to the EXIF!
This shot was from approximately 35m, R7 + RF100-500L

I know many people will prefer the pleasantry of a blue sky, but the gray cloud subdue the Kestrel's similar cool greys draws attention to the warm colors. I'm glad to see both! I don't have many BIF shots yet, but I prefer a bit of texture, so clouds as well as blue or when completely overcast, clouds with texture. While the grey does draw attention to the kestrels colours, it also makes me think it was shot in a studioI know many people will prefer the pleasantry of a blue sky, but the gray cloud subdue the Kestrel's similar cool greys draws attention to the warm colors.
