Cardinal in the snow.
EF-S 55-250 at 171 mm, 1/320 sec at f/5.6, ISO 800, polarizing filter.
My mother-in-law gave me this lens after her camera got stolen, and I like it quite a bit for an inexpensive lens. With a 1.6 x crop body, you get a nice boost on the telephoto end, so 250 = 400mm. And I am happy with the IQ.

What am I doing wrong?
I keep getting inconsistent results. I would have thought the Gold Finch would be easy to ficus on as it has so much contrast. These are all hand hold, with IS in hte lens, and shot at fast shutter speeds.

I hate to reply to my own post, but I now think it's the Haze Filter I have on the lens. I took some shots with it off, and they look a bit more clear. I can't really fault the filter, it's over 20 years old and I only gave it a rudimentary cleaning before placing it on the lens.

I'm a photographer for my school's newspaper. It's volunteer, and I have no formal training, I've only learned by doing. I use this lens for 90% of my pictures. These are some of my best shots. I think this is really an over-performing lens for the money.

I find this lens a bit slow both in terms of aperture and AF for me now, but i loved it when i got... it is a great lens to get started on and great value. Good for travel as it is small light and versitile... I managed to get a good bird in flight shot, but this is one of 10 misses.
