Grams and child, China

Besides landscape I enjoy running about far lands meeting and photographing locals. Weekend Tenjian China when all the grandparents are out with the kids. This one I call the "Foreign Devil" look, gramps was kind enough to introduce me to an uncertain result!

If you find people fascinating Asia is a rich environment. This old lady down at the Wanchai Meat Market, Hong Kong.

A lot going on in this busy world, that year a similar old lady was walking down the sidewalk near here minding her own business and a 300 lb restaurant sign fell on her. The other big danger for the street walking person is the millions of air conditioning units somewhat fastened to the sides of most every building.

Many shots in such tight quarters are taken with the camera at waist level in a wide angle mode and some luck or skill involved in the outcome. A real pointing and shooting.

Brothers and mom, Star Ferry Hong Kong:

Kids are the most alert people, very seldom you can photograph children without them being aware, adults often not so much, preoccupied or retreated into some shell.

Two sorts of street portraits come to mind, the sort where you capture someone unawares either close or far, or the ones in which you have some interaction with the subject, eliciting a reaction.

These gals welcomed being photographed, on the streets of Hong Kong or Adana Turkey, perhaps revealing another aspect of their humanity.

A case of an unaware subject. This young Australian boy was with his grandfather and nanny (I presume) and absolutely bored to his limits touring around the Hong Kong waterfront with them.

An advantage of digichromes as opposed to film is we can afford to take a lot of images without a National Geographic budget. My technique, such as it is: always take the camera, look ahead and around for interesting people and subjects, practice knowing where the camera is pointed. Enjoy your travels! Cheers: Tom
