Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM

Re: Sigma 35mm f/1.4

.
I took these yesterday for myself to see how they looked. If they're useful to anyone here....

It's a full-stop aperture series from f/16.0 to f/1.4 with the new Sigma 35mm f/1.4 lens mounted on Canon 5D3. Camera is on tripod to keep spatial reference. Otherwise, nothing special, just reset aperture between shots and pressed shutter button with a finger. AF was used (center point selected). Given that light was coming through some tree branches, it won't be good for judging light so much, especially since it was windy and the branches were moving -- no leaves on them though. All at ISO 100. Shot RAW, converted to jpg out of Lightroom 4 with no alterations or corrections. These are medium size from the Smugmug host. You can follow back to the source for original size files.

what can you see when it comes to the background and "bokeh".
Some people has described the sigma "bokeh" as inferior to the Canon 35/1,4.
sigma 35/1,4 , Canon 35/1,4 both at 1,4

The background is far/blurred too much to show any difference, with any lens.

If you still have access to those two lenses, try comparing them with not so distant background.

last ones.

That first image is one of the nicer "bokeh" shots I have seen with the lens. I like the shot quite a bit (perhaps raise the exposure a bit on the model's face). Perhaps lenses in that focal length are less capable of producing a "melting away" bokeh. I have seen some shots with the 35L that did, however. Keep posting them. You are getting some nice results.

i disagree about the distance, blur is blur behind the the same focus plane, but off course I can take new pictures

How do you explain this then? http://www.flickr.com/photos/zackhuggins/8483812543/#sizes/l/in/photostream/ Or this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/marrozik/8251783575/#in/pool-2109177@N20/lightbox/?

There is a Zeiss document about bokeh, easy to find. They have a lot of diagrams and actual measurements about the "blur is blur" of lenses corrected in a different way.

that is not what Im saying, the pictures I show are equal exposed and have the same distance to the back ground, do you want to make a special order of certain distances?

Not many people have access to both lenses, so you can really do interesting comparisons.

You can try to take a picture of an object staying at, say, 1.5-2m from you, with a bookshelf with books at 4m from you, or something similar. The idea is for the background to be blurred by a little, and to be of "busy" type.

BTW, I have many great shots with my 35L, but quite a few which reveal the busy bokeh. I am not asking you to do something artificial. You must see double lines with both lenses; I know for sure, that they can both do that in certain real life situations.

Re: Sigma 35mm f/1.4

I am loving my Sigma 35mm! I thought I would not get another 35mm prime, after selling my Canon 35L off last year. I sold it because I used it seldom and had just got a 24-70mm f/2.8L II. However, at the price I was able to get the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 for (I had Amazon points), I could not pass it up. I have been very pleased by the results, which I will say are better than what the Canon 35L was able to do. This thing is bloody sharp at f/1.4L and resistant to harsh flares and chromatic aberrations.

Some samples taken on my 5D Mark III:

And two more, now please tell me where is Canon better when it comes to bokeh, or vice versa.
To me they are very similar

I think we can kill another myth, that one of the lenses are so much better regarding bokeh - agree?

If you take macro shots, yes.

Just look at the real life examples above my post.
