Why not a Canon RF 500 mm 6.3L?? I miss the old Canon EF 400mm 5.6L, it was such an amazing lens!
There's a reason that after the EF 100-400 came out, the 300/4 and 400/5.6 just languished, and we had the EF 100-400 II and now the RF 100-500 f/4.5-7.1. That's the reason we won't see an RF 500/6.3.

It's the same reason we have an RF 100-300/2.8 instead of an RF 300/2.8, and we're supposed to get an RF 200-500/4 instead of an RF 500/4.

I trust you see the pattern...

Sure I can understand but a zoom is ALWAYS worse than a prime and less compact.

And 500mm is a gap in Nikon current lineup (they have 400 4.5 and 600 6.3 and 800 6.3) and could be an oportunity for Canon. Personally I would love, Nikon is really killing in prime afordable telephoto lens.

Nikon 600/6.3 – $4800
Nikon 800/6.3 – $6500

Canon 600/11 – $800
Canon 800/11 – $1000

I suspect you have a different definition of affordable than most people.

ALWAYS is kind of relative these days though. Many of these latest zooms are approaching prime performance in that the difference, while measurable on a chart, is negligible in practice.

As for the 500mm gap - what opportunity do you see? Canon has way more users than Nikon, and despite the rhetoric both Canon and Nikon's sales numbers seem to indicate that not a lot of people are jumping ship (though a lot do talk about it on forums like these). My personal thought is we will see both a 500 f/4 and 300 2.8 in RF mount eventually - both AFTER the 200-400/500 RF iteration is out. The prime guys are already covered with the 400 2.8 and 600/4. The agencies will be more interested in the 300 and 400/500 zooms. Then the 300 and 500 primes will follow to grab the niche markets left for them to serve. It will be years though. Just my thought. No insider info.

There’s nothing on that roadmap that will break the internet. What am I missing?
I think folks are being a bit pedantic about this. Speaking for myself as a long time reader here I believe there was a heavy implication in the article that the long ached for/griped over 35mm L lens would be the one to 'break the internet'. Perhaps newer or more casual readers would not have the context of all the past discussions on that lens to connect the dots, or perhaps by doing so I am just out in left field on this one. Its been said a few times in the pages of this chat, so at least I am not alone.

Thinking is will be the 200-500 f4. However, it could be a more compact version with an external zoom similar to the RF 70-200 versions at a lower price point or is could be an internal zoom like the 100-300 and cost a small fortune. Who the hell knows?
The 200-500/4 patents show an internal zoom.
