No Canon Interest in astrophotography?

Has Canon no interest in astrophotography?
They are certainly lacking behind compared to other brands like Nikon and especially Sony in this category (see link below).

Canon users still use the old 6D or modified 6D models or the now discontinued Ra for astro, while Sony are getting more and more popular. I recently bought the R5 and quite a lot of RF lenses, and I love the R5, BUT for astro Canon need to get back in the game!

We need a new Canon R6a and a high quality fast RF zoom astro lens (faster than the f/2.8 15-35mm, like f/1.4 14-21mm.
PLEASE….

The rise of Sony in astro is funny, their on-sensor noise reduction has been nicknamed 'star eater' and it is still present in their current models.
Plus they don't have any astro modified cameras, as far as I know. Sony's marketing genius can't be denied. As long as they have so many internet influencers recommending Sony, people will buy them no matter how good or crappy they are.

Canon's 6Da and Ra are still among the most reco0mmended by astro sites, as far as I could tell.

6Da and Ra are still good cameras, but as you can see (link) Canon seems to be loosing ground amongst photographers who’s astrophotos have been shortlisted for “Astrophoto of the year” for the last five years, so I think it’s fair to assume, that these photographers know their gear as well as the competition on the market.

Furthermore, although RF f/2.8 15-35mm is a very good lens, it’s certainly not optimal for astro, and landscape-astro is a growing community. So in my opinion, Canon really need to produce a faster wide angle RF lens for astro or - even better - allow third party companies like Sigma to enter the market of RF mounts.

Yeah, I don’t want to argue against people actually doing the thing and being successful at it.

My kids are finally at an age where I can start thinking about voluntarily losing sleep to try astro :)

The funny thing is, I spent a lot of time being an amateur astronomer back in the day, and in that community "astrophotography" means taking pictures through a telescope (which will be very narrow field of view!), rather than star fields with a wide angle lens. Which could get entertaining in film days when you wouldn't see your results until later. To be honest at the time it struck me as an exercise in frustration greater than golf. Then a few decades later there were digital cameras but they were expensive because only specialized models could do a long exposure.

If I ever decide to get into it now, of course, I can adapt a telescope onto my camera, and it simply becomes a really big lens.

I’m loosing my patience with Canon. I have a lot of Canon lenses as well as the R5 and an astromodified R6 mkII - but I’m beginng to consider to sell everything and convert to Sony. Why are there NO wide angle prime lenses for the RF mount? The 15-35mm f/2.8 is decent but not really good for astro and Aurora and simply not fast enough. Let’s get that 14mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 prime with an RF mount PLEASE!!! Or give Sigma access to the RF mount. You are loosing A LOT of astro-interested photographers Canon. Wake up now!!!

I want such a lens, too. I think they will release an ultra wide prime this year. It's unfortunate for some of us, but they appear to be choosing their product order based on financial data.

How big is the market for astrophotography? I didn't find any sales data on the Ra or the D810A to tell.

There are a bunch of niches Canon hasn't gone for with RF lenses right now -- nothing for serious architecture/product photographers with TS lenses either, or an updated MP-E lens for macro. Heck, I suspect an RF 35L is gonna be a lot more popular than a RF 14L, but nothing there either.

Personally, I'd sooner just get a dedicated astro camera (such as one from Zwo) and adapt to whatever lens I want rather than switching systems.

Zwo’s are great and superior for DSO, but not very useful for nightscapes (landscape-astro) where you carry your gear around a lot.
Let’s hope Sigma finally announce RF mounts at their upcoming event late February - Sigma 14mm f/1.4 RF would be awesome
